Joe Lombardo, the governor of Nevada, emphasized the importance of empowering families to choose the best educational path for their children. He pledged to sign only legislation that supports school choice and expands opportunity. This statement was made on X on March 17.
"Parents deserve the right to choose the best education for their children," said Lombardo, Nevada State Executive - Governor (R). "I will only sign legislation that protects school choice and expands opportunity."
According to the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority, charter school enrollment has reached 63,609 students for the 2024–25 academic year, marking a 2.7% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, private school enrollment dropped by 1.61% to 22,442 students, according to state-released enrollment data. These figures suggest a growing preference for charter options over traditional private schooling.
Recent data from the Nevada Department of Education indicates that public school enrollment has remained relatively stable, while private school enrollment declined in 2024–25 for the first time in four years. The state's private school population fell to 22,442 students, down by 1.61%, following years of post-pandemic growth.
Lombardo took office as Nevada’s 31st governor in January 2023 after serving as Sheriff of Clark County. According to The Nevada Independent, he is a Republican advocating for school choice and proposing larger investments in charter schools and scholarships. His education platform also includes teacher pay raises and performance incentives.
