WASHINGTON – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) signed three discharge petitions to force a full House vote on commonsense gun violence prevention measures currently blocked by House Republican leadership. Horsfordis a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and has previously introduced the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, legislation that makes groundbreaking investments in community violence intervention programs.

“It’s past time we enact meaningful, commonsense gun violence prevention measures that will keep our communities safer,” said CongressmanHorsford. “Through my Break the Cycle of Violence legislation, I’ve been working to help reduce crime with investments in community-based violence intervention (CVI) programs that will reduce crime, save lives and break the cycle of violence that has impacted so many Americans. Exactly 30 years after my father was killed by senseless gun violence, we passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which included significant CVI investments. Now it’s time to build on that progress by requiring basic background checks, closing the Charleston Loophole, and restoring the assault weapons ban. We cannot wait for another tragedy to strike. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to sign the three petitions to bring these evidence-backed reforms to a vote.

”The three discharge petitions would force a vote on the following bills that Congressman Horsford cosponsors: 

H.R. 715 – Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which would require that every sale of a firearm include a background check with certain exemptions for family transfers and temporary hunting transfers.H.R. 2403 – Enhanced Background Checks Act, which would close the “Charleston Loophole” that allows individuals to purchase firearms before approval of their background check if it is still pending after three days.H.R. 698 – Assault Weapons Ban, which would prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of semiautomatic weapons and ammunition-feeding devices capable of accepting more than fifteen rounds.
