WASHINGTON – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) on May 31, 2023, voted for the Bipartisan Budget Agreement, a bill to raise our nation’s debt ceiling while agreeing to budget framework for our next two years. While Republicans control the majority of the House, they did not have enough votes to pass this legislation. Horsford joined 164 other Democrats to allow this bill to move forward to the Senate, and avert having the United States default on the debts we already owe, which would have led to an economic disaster for all Americans. Horsford issued the following statement following tonight’s vote:
“Let’s be clear – we are here today because of a manufactured crisis by the extreme MAGA Republicans who held hostage resources that are vital to our working families in Nevada and across the country to protect tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. Our nation’s debt limit and the annual budget process are two different things, but this extreme move to push us to this point has brought us too close to defaulting on our obligations.“While I object to the way this was handled by the Republicans in the House, I voted for the bill today for one simple reason – to save Nevadans and their jobs from an economic disaster. I have said all along, I am willing to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring our nation’s spending under control. I did not want to negotiate with extremist hostage takers who held our nation’s economic standing in exchange for drastic and brutal cuts that would hurt Nevada families. I am pleased that the final product was not as severe as these extremists were pushing for, and ultimately, more people will be eligible for essential nutrition assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.”
