On July 28, Mayor Muriel Bowser called for National Guard activation last week to assist with people who have entered the country illegally at the southern border that were bussed to the nation's capital from Texas and Arizona, The Patriot Project reports. In the past, she has called the nation's capital a "sanctuary city" for immigrants. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has been inconsistent with her stance on border security, as she's wavered on her public opinion of Title 42. 

"While the hypocrisy of some on the left becomes evident, such as the example of Mayor Bowser of Washington DC screaming about illegals coming to her city after declaring it a sanctuary city, others on the left are hiding through election day hoping no one takes notice of them and their lack of action to defend the border. Among these are senators Kelly and Masto," Ken Cuccinelli, former attorney general of Virginia, said.

Bowser continued to affirm DC as a sanctuary city and express the city's values. 

"The values, laws, and policies of Washington, DC did not change on Election Day," Bowser said. "We celebrate our diversity and respect all DC residents no matter their immigration status. We are a sanctuary city because we know that our neighborhoods are safer and stronger when no one is afraid to call on our government for help, and when our police can focus on protecting and serving."

Bowser earlier asserted that DC is a sanctuary city on Twitter.

"Washington, DC is a sanctuary city. We protect the rights and humanity of all our residents, and our #DCValues and our local culture are guided by a celebration of diversity and inclusivity," Bowser said. 

In their attempt to put the issue of the Biden administration’s lax immigration enforcement policies on the doorstep of the federal government, both Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey have been moving immigrants who crossed into the U.S. at the southern border to the nation's capital.

“We are sending them to the United States Capitol where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border," Governor Abbott said. 

Abbott hopes that this will cause the federal government to be more empathetic to the problems illegal immigration can cause in border states.

“Washington, D.C. finally understands what Texans have been dealing with every single day, as our communities are overrun and overwhelmed by thousands of illegal immigrants thanks to President Biden’s open border policies," Abbott said. "The true ongoing humanitarian crisis is along the southern border."

For fiscal year 2022, there have been 1,746,119 confrontations at the southwest border as of June 30, which The Patriot Project asserts has already gone over the entire FY 2021 record number of 1,734,686. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has a record of changing positions on border security, according to the Review Journal. In April, she was part of a growing list of Democrats who are up for re-election this fall and spoke out against Biden's decision to end the Title 42 border immigration policy. 

Conversely, when given the chance to join Republicans in calling for a vote to extend Title 42, she voted against it. In 2020, Cortez Masto sponsored legislation to defund border wall construction at the southern border, and in 2021, she was one of the leading Senate voices demanding amnesty for the nation’s 11 to 22 million illegal aliens through a budget reconciliation package.
