Gov. Steve Sisolak has officially called an end to the COVID-19 state of emergency in Nevada.
“Today, we are turning the page on the state of emergency caused by COVID-19 and are laser focused on ensuring our recovery from the public health, fiscal and economic crisis serves the needs of Nevada’s families,” Sisolak said in a release.
Sisolak signed a statement formally ending the Declaration of Emergency regarding the COVID-19 pandemic last week. The declaration took effect on May 20.
The state of emergency had been in force since March 2020. It loosened the reins on state government to better allow it to take action in the face of the challenges posed by the unprecedented pandemic.
By canceling the state of emergency, the state government is losing some of the flexibility it afforded so officials could more quickly respond to the circumstances that cropped up amid the pandemic.
The release said the state of emergency could be lifted because government entities had come together to plan and collaborate, allowing the state to get a handle on managing the spread of COVID.
“I am proud of the way we came together as the Battle Born State to respond to this virus and to protect lives and livelihoods,” Sisolak said. “COVID-19 is still with us, and we can all still take steps to protect ourselves from the virus, but now is the time to end this State of Emergency.”
