New Online Medical Assisting Program at Carrington College

117

Carrington College-Reno recently issued the following announcement.

New Online Medical Assisting Program at Carrington College

Carrington College is pleased to announce a new online Medical Assisting program that prepares graduates to work in medical clinics, physicians’ offices, and other health care facilities. The program includes an externship while incorporating technical coursework that focuses on front-office administrative responsibilities such as clerical and bookkeeping functions, processing medical insurance claims, and other clinical responsibilities.

Though medical assistants’ job descriptions vary from office to office, they generally have a set of shared duties and tasks. Medical assistants aid doctors by performing basic clinical procedures and handling a variety of administrative duties. Most medical assistants work in physicians’ offices and other health care facilities to keep operations running efficiently. Their career path can lead to employment in a variety of health care environments such as physicians’ offices, outpatient facilities, as well as state, local and private hospitals.

“We are pleased to see the popular Medical Assisting program expand beyond our campuses in Arizona, California, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington,” said Senior Director of Enrollment Services at Carrington College, Dan Simon. “Medical assistants are critical to enhancing patient-care outcomes as they work with everyone in the healthcare process — patients, doctors, and insurance companies. Since they understand every aspect, medical assistants can help explain to patients why certain tests or procedures are necessary, they can advocate for the patients with a physician, and they understand the complicated aspects of insurance,” added Simon.

While most courses for the Medical Assisting certificate program are delivered in an online format, students are still required to complete an externship in an approved health care setting. The program culminates in a Certificate of Achievement and prepares students to take the appropriate certification and licensure exams related to their individual majors.[1] Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the National Health career Association Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate (CCMA) exam.

“Knowing the system as well as they do, medical assistants help the entire process work for everyone involved,” said Simon. “All healthcare employees help people and have a tremendous impact on their patients, but medical assistants are especially important because they work in so many aspects of healthcare and interact with patients and employees at every level,” added Simon. “We are pleased to now offer this program online which allows more students to support their communities.”

The communities served by Carrington College benefit from its focus on outcome-based learning and the College’s ability to adapt to its changing needs. Faculty, administrators, and staff are committed to helping students develop specific vocational knowledge and skills, as well as achieving the core student learning outcomes in information management, technical literacy, and professional development.
