Agenda Items 6 – Recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the College of Southern Nevada (CSN): City Council celebrated 50 years of education at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN). Founded in 1971 as Clark County Community College, it became the Community College of Southern Nevada in 1991, and in 2007 the institution was renamed the College of Southern Nevada. CSN now has three campuses, one on West Charleston, one in North Las Vegas and one in Henderson. They feature more than 70 academic programs, offering hundreds of degrees and certificates.
Agenda Items 11 – Health Equity And Literacy: City Council accepted a grant award in the amount of $1,670,000 from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the Health Equity And Literacy (HEAL) program as part of a new, two-year initiative to identify and implement best practices for improving health literacy to enhance COVID-19 vaccination and other mitigation practices among underserved populations. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) awarded grants to 73 local governments as part of the program. HEAL fosters organizational and individual health literacy through community based health education, health professional development and coordinated messaging. The city will work with partners to build organizational health literacy in primary care and community settings. The proposed approach builds health literacy by: engaging health clinic leadership so health literacy is integral to its mission, structure, and operations; integrating Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) into strategic and operational planning as well as quality improvement goals and measures; preparing healthcare staff to address health literacy issues and monitor progress; training for emergency preparedness crises, like the COVID-19 pandemic; and, building trust through effective health communications using the community health worker model.
Agenda Items 18 – Vision Zero Action Plan: City Council approved a contract with Wood Rogers, Inc., for the development of the city’s Vision Zero Action Plan. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate traffic crash-related fatalities and severe injuries, and this action plan will develop a prioritized list of future improvements, timelines, and performance measures to accomplish the goal. This Vision Zero Action Plan will help the city compete for federal funding targeted toward traffic crash reductions. Wood Rodgers, Inc. is located in Las Vegas, Nevada.
