Visual Arts Professor Rossi Todorova Appointed Reno City Artist

Visual Arts Professor Rossitza Todorova has been appointed the Reno City Artist by the Reno Arts and Culture Commission, a position she will serve from Sept. 2022 to Dec. 2023. As the Reno City Artist, Todorova will promote visual arts through community engagement, public art talks, presentations to the City Council, and curated exhibitions.

Seeing this as the perfect opportunity to give back to her community, Todorova applied for this position hoping to educate, inspire, and unite. As a multi-disciplinary visual artist, she creates art in response to place, movement, and time. In her current paintings, she explores how landscape embodies the idea of time: past, present and future.

“This is the third year that the city has appointed an artist, and I’m so excited I was given this opportunity,” Todorova said. “I applied because I really care about this place, and I want to be able to represent the city in this capacity and use it to start some deeper conversations while celebrating local art.”

As part of her current body of work, she has depicted the Great Basin landscape inspired by walks and hikes around the Reno/Tahoe area. Her work shows an interruption to the landscape with scrolling lines in the space between the viewer and the vista beyond. The forms are visual metaphors for what we bring as we view the desert. They are the reflections of ourselves that we place on the landscape.

During her tenure as City Artist, Todorova will have a solo exhibition at the City of Reno Metro Gallery from June 19–Aug. 4, 2023. She will also curate a group exhibition at the Metro Gallery, April 24–June 9, 2023, featuring Northern Nevada artists whose work addresses the high desert landscape. In addition to these exhibitions, Todorova will have the opportunity to engage with constituents via public talks about her process and artwork.

Todorova’s art has been exhibited internationally and is in museum collections, including the Nevada Museum of Art. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Drawing from Arizona State University.  She has given numerous public talks and curated exhibitions while continuing to teach painting, drawing and sculpture here at the college.

Latinx Students and Faculty Celebrate with Senator Cortez Masto

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto met with Latinx students and faculty.

Latinx students, faculty and staff had a chance to meet and chat with U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto on Oct. 14 as part of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. During the Nosotros en Educación event, students, faculty and staff shared café and pan dulce while the Senator spoke about her work supporting Nevada students and families, as well as her experiences as the first Latina elected to the Senate.

“As one of the first people in my family to graduate from college, I understand how important it is for students to have the doors of opportunity held open for them,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “And as the first Latina elected to the Senate, I’m doing all I can to keep those doors open behind me and ensure Nevada’s Latino community has the support it needs to succeed. I’ve worked hard at the federal level to make sure students in the Silver State who want to can get a college education and find rewarding careers after they graduate, and I’ll continue to support Nevada’s students in every way I can.”

During the event, students were able to ask questions to Senator Cortez Masto about becoming future leaders. Hosted by Vice President of Student Services and Diversity Estella Gutierrez, this was the largest event held for the College’s Latinx community to celebrate their shared heritage.
