Gov. Steve Sisolak (D-NV) will use the next legislative session to propose a bill to create the Las Vegas Academic Medical District.
Sisolak announced the grand opening of the Nevada Health and Bioscience Corporation’s Kirk Kerkorian Medical Education Building with the objective of the measure is to enhance the medical care of state residents, according to a news release shared by the Nevada government.
“No Nevadan should have to travel out of state for life-saving health care – and with the creation of the Las Vegas Academic Medical District, we will be able to offer education for specialized services, develop centers for research and overall create a more comprehensive medical system in Nevada,” Sisolak said in the release. “Not only will an academic medical district improve patient outcomes, which is our top priority, but it will have a significant impact on our economic development and lead to new, high-paying jobs for our residents.”
The district will zero in on healthcare and academic improvement, along with medical innovation.
City of Las Vegas Councilman Brian Knudsen said that the state leaders were working on creating a comprehensive healthcare system in Nevada.
“The initial investment in the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, an ambulatory care center and a public health lab managed by University Medical Center within the Las Vegas Academic Medical District, leveraged with funding from our philanthropic leaders, marks the beginning of academic healthcare, research, and an economy to support all Nevadans,” said Knudsen.
