Sisolak accepts resignation of Director of NDOC following prisoner escape: 'Corrections institutions across the nation are facing severe staffing shortages'

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak recently announced a change to leadership at the Nevada Department of Corrections.

According to a press release, Sisolak has requested and accepted the resignation of Charles Daniels, the director of the Nevada Department of Corrections. Effective immediately, William Gittere, the deputy director of operations, will serve as acting director for the department.

“My office will continue to work closely with the team at the Nevada Department of Corrections to ensure the safety and well-being of both NDOC employees and inmates who are in the State’s care,” Sisolak said, according to the press release. “Corrections institutions across the nation are facing severe staffing shortages and together, we are working with NDOC to look at innovative ways to increase recruitment at all facilities within this state.”

Daniels' resignation comes as the State continues an investigation into a prisoner's escape from NDOC custody. Six officers have been placed on administrative leave by as NDOC conducts its investigation into any lapses in proper protocol.

Sisolak has also authorized a small group of advisors to investigate the operations of Southern Desert Correctional Center and present suggestions on ways to make conditions better.

Members of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services are working with NDOC staff to ensure the mental and physical health of every prisoner in NDOC's custody and to guarantee that they have access to the highest standard of care within the system.
