Nevada officials recently filed a comprehensive plan to secure $38 million in federal funding, according to a press release from Gov. Steve Sisolak's (D-Nev.) office.

The funds will be used to improve the state's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and network, the press release noted. This should transform Nevada's "transportation electrification future."

After the plan is approved, the state will be eligible for funding from the National Electrical Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

"The future of transportation is electric, and I'm proud to see Nevada's public agencies and private sector working collaboratively to develop a comprehensive plan that will leverage every dollar to build out a statewide EV network that will be a model for the rest of the nation," Sisolak said in the press release.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will receive the funding over the next five years, the press release noted.

"NDOT's NEVI plan reflects collaboration from across the state to build upon the success of the Nevada Electric Highway and to continue to bring the sustainability and environmental benefits of transportation electrification to our state," Marie Steele, vice president of Electrification and Energy Services for NV Energy, said in the press release. "NV Energy looks forward to working with NDOT to implement an expansive network of safe, accessible, public electric vehicle charging infrastructure for all Nevadans, powered with low-cost, reliable energy."

The improvements could help the state's rural areas, Carolyn Turner, executive director of the Nevada Rural Electric Association (NREA), said in the press release.

"Rural deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is critical to support Nevada's long-term economic development and electrification goals," she said. "NREA members see this funding as a real opportunity to invest in the future of communities served by consumer-owned utilities, and we look forward to the continued partnership with NDOT to implement the state's Alternative Fueling Infrastructure Plan."
