Keep people alive: The life-saving benefits of CPR

515

Northwest Career College recently issued the following announcement.

CPR is one of the best ways to save lives. It can be used in medical emergencies, like heart attacks and near-drownings.

But how does it work? CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which means that it works by stimulating someone’s heart and lungs until they are able to breathe on their own again.

There are many steps involved in giving CPR including chest compressions, mouth-to-mouth breathing, or just oxygen given through a mask. These techniques will all help increase the likelihood that you’re successful when saving someone’s life!

 What is CPR?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that can be used for anyone who is not breathing or has an abnormal heart rhythm.

 What happens during CPR?

CPR consists of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing, both done by the rescuer. The first step in CPR is calling 911 as quickly as possible if you think someone needs help. Then, follow these steps:

  • Lay the person on their back on a hard surface
  • Give 30 chest compressions (each about two inches deep)
  • Push down at least two inches with your palm to push blood through the body
  • Then give them one breath
  • Check the pulse every few minutes
  • Repeat until emergency personnel arrive

If you keep doing CPR, you can keep someone alive until emergency personnel arrives.

CPR is a lifesaver! It can restart the heart and breathing in someone who has stopped both. And it’s easy to learn – even if you’ve never done it before.

 How does it work?

CPR works because it stimulates the heart and lungs so they keep working even though there’s no electrical activity in the heart. The chest compressions help pump blood through the body, and the mouth-to-mouth breathing helps deliver oxygen to the lungs.

CPR can keep people alive until paramedics arrive, which gives them a better chance of surviving cardiac arrest. In fact, CPR doubles or triples a person’s chances of survival!

What if I don’t know how to do CPR?

There are plenty of resources available that can teach you how to do CPR properly.

Many hospitals and community groups offer classes, and many workplaces have training programs available for their employees. You can also find instructional videos online that will walk you through the steps of performing CPR.

It’s important to get trained so that you’re prepared in the event of an emergency.

If you think someone is having a cardiac arrest, don’t wait for help to arrive! Call 911 and start CPR immediately while waiting for paramedics to get there. If they can receive CPR from bystanders before getting a defibrillator, their chances of surviving increase exponentially.

Where can I get a CPR qualification?

Right here at NCC! We offer all our students the chance to gain their CPR qualification for free!
