Saxon the Suffrage Cat 2021 Winners Announced

1

Women’s History and Culture Center issued the following announcement on Aug. 23.

It is fitting that on August 8, International Cat Day, the Women’s History and Culture Center (WHCC) celebrated Saxon the Suffrage Cat by accepting art contest applications for a decorated Saxon cut-out. History buffs will recognize Saxon the Suffrage Cat as the cat adopted by Nell Richardson and Alice Burke in 1916 as they drove cross-country to promote the Women’s Right to Vote movement.

The creative and educational summer activity is open annually to youth and adults to express their artistic talents. WHCC provided cutouts of Saxon to decorate and held three Saxon decorating workshops for community members that chose to take advantage of art supplies provided. Saxon and WHCC are grateful to the talented participants!

Saxon 2021 entries above. First place winners were Charlie Baird (age 0 to 6 category), Kasia Marler (age 9 to 12 category), Patty and Jessica Crain (adult age category). Each of these winners received a cash prize.

Dee Love was awarded Best in Show, and First Place Essay category. Dee received a cash prize and the cat tree shown here with her entry. Congratulations to the cat that is the recipient of that tree!

The Women’s History and Culture Center shares information on women’s achievements and multicultural issues to improve the quality of life of women and men in the Greater Mesquite area. Find out more by visiting whccmesquitenv.org.
