The UNLV Hustlin’ Rebels defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs 17-1 in a run-rule game on May 9 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. The Rebels’ offense produced six home runs and scored in four different innings to secure one of their most dominant wins of the season.
This decisive win highlights UNLV’s strong performance as they move closer to a series sweep against Fresno State. The Rebels improved their record to 28-22 overall and 9-11 in Mountain West play.
UNLV took an early lead after Nin Burns II hit a two-run double, followed by an RBI single from Jayden Hertel. In the second inning, Gunnar Myro started with a double before Burns II delivered another two-run single. Jonny Rodriguez then hit a two-run homer, and Gavin Taylor added a three-run blast, pushing the lead to 10-0.
Fresno State managed only one run when Michael Boyd hit an RBI ground-rule double in the third inning. UNLV pitcher Carson Lane allowed just one earned run across five innings while striking out four batters. The Rebels continued their offensive surge with home runs from Drew Barragan, Rodriguez (who finished with three homers), Jack Salmon, and Taylor.
Rodriguez became the first Rebel since Xavier Scruggs in 2008 to hit three home runs in a game and now has twelve RBIs over two games against Fresno State this weekend. Barragan extended his on-base streak to forty-nine games dating back to last season, while every starter scored at least once during this matchup.
UNLV will attempt to complete the series sweep when they face Fresno State again on Sunday, May 10.
