Barbara Roth, who serves as chair and professor of anthropology, has been honored with the Byron Cummings Award by the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society. The award recognizes individuals for their outstanding research and contributions to knowledge in anthropology, history, or related fields that focus on the Southwestern United States.

Roth’s work has advanced understanding in several areas, including hunter-gatherer adaptations, the transition to agriculture, household social structures, and gender identities. Her research spans regions from the Mojave Desert in California and Nevada to the Mimbres Valley in New Mexico.

“The award is given for outstanding research and contributions to knowledge in anthropology, history, or a related field of study pertaining to the Southwestern U.S.” according to the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society.
