The University of Nevada, Reno announced on Apr. 20 a series of events for Earth Month aimed at encouraging the campus community to support the planet and advance sustainability initiatives.
These activities are designed to foster environmental awareness and drive progress toward the University’s strategic goal of making “Silver and Blue the New Green.” The initiative seeks to position the Reno-Tahoe region as a center for sustainability, research, and education.
Campus members are invited to participate in various events throughout April and early May. These include plastic film recycling efforts with drop-off bins available year-round in several campus buildings. Once 2,000 pounds of material is collected, local company Trex will convert it into a bench made from recycled plastic. Other highlights include the Waste Not, Want Not Competition where students compete with culinary staff to reduce food waste; an Earth Day Thrift Swap; a Farmer’s Market featuring environmental organizations; and multiple planting activities such as Arbor Day tree planting in Las Vegas and a Plant-a-thon at the Joe Crowley Student Union roundabout.
Additional programming includes an overnight Earth Day getaway at Lake Tahoe focused on hands-on learning about sustainability, live music performances, family-friendly science museum tours during Spring into Science day, an e-waste recycling event organized by Nevada Esports Club alongside Environmental Health & Safety’s Waste Management team, and a highway clean-up project in partnership with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful.
The University encourages all community members to learn more about ongoing efforts through Sustainable Nevada or join groups working on green initiatives. Event organizers say these activities not only celebrate Earth Month but also help build lasting habits that benefit both campus life and the wider environment.
