Gov. Steve Sisolak proclaimed Monday as Environmental Justice Day in Nevada.

According to a state government news release, the state has provided information to residents about climate change issues in their area, as well as state and federal initiatives.

“Low-income households and historically marginalized communities far too often bear the brunt of the impacts of climate change, and this can have lifelong, devastating impacts,” Sisolak said in the release.

Earlier this year, Sisolak created a state-level environmentalist team to execute the federal Justice 40 Initiative, which seeks every community to be accounted for when it comes to climate development.

According to Dr. Kristen Averyt, the governor’s senior climate advisor: “I am grateful to the Governor’s continued commitment to combating climate change and protecting Nevadans. National, state and local leaders are all working together on this critical priority and together, we’re making Nevada a stronger and more climate resilient state.”

The state-level environmentalist team has met with local governments and residents in order to develop an itinerary regarding climate change preparation.

“In Nevada, we’re committed to reversing this trend and that starts by assessing where we are and where we need to go. We’re committed to continuing to invest wisely in these areas to benefit Nevadans in need,” the governor said.
