A group of Nevada parents is growing concerned about the role that critical race theory plays in their children’s education.

Parents in Reno are frustrated that school administrators have failed to acknowledge the presence of this theory, which they claim is harmful and divisive in nature.

“According to CRT proponents, everything in American society is racist,” Citizens Renewing America stated in their 33-page guide to combating critical race theory. “They would argue, without proper context or consideration of the complex opinions of the founders, that the Founding of America was very bad and that each successive generation of oppressors systematically organized everything so that all the things that exist in society give the oppressors an advantage, and that people of the same race are expected to think the same way about nearly everything.”

Rhonda Martin, a Reno grandmother, said that her family is working to get community involvement on the topic and explained that some parents are opting for homeschool if private school is not an option, PT News reported.

A Black mother in Clark County is suing a Las Vegas charter school over a class that taught that certain races have an inherent privilege over others, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Carson City School District and Washoe County School District maintain that critical race theory is not part of their schools’ curriculums, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, despite teaching that some people are simply at an advantage based on their race.

Critical race theory is believed to specifically target heterosexual white men as oppressors historically, according to Citizens Renewing America.
