The Nevada Mining Association (NVMA) has announced the winners of its 2021 Mine Operator Safety Awards. These awards acknowledge mining operations in Nevada that demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety.
“Nevada mining continues to set the bar high when it comes to workplace safety,” stated Tyre Gray, NVMA President. “It is one thing to talk about every worker going home healthy after their shift, but another to put it into practice. These 25 mine operators consistently do just that and represent the best of the best. Congratulations to all!”
The NVMA Safety Awards are determined based on performance during the previous calendar year. The top mines are selected in various categories according to their safety rate, which is calculated using a formula that considers factors such as the number of employees on site, hours worked in 2020, penalties for lost-time accidents, reportable incidents, and lost-time days. Several recipients achieved a “triple zero” status—no reportable injuries, lost time incidents, or restrictive days.
In 2020, Nevada mines logged a total of 27 million work hours across 225 mine sites statewide. This year, 25 mine operators were honored with an award.
Alongside the operator awards, NVMA also recognized 37 individuals for their dedication to workplace safety. The Individual Safety Awards were announced in July. Both sets of awards will be presented at a ceremony during the Nevada Mining Association Convention in September.
