Amazon received $3 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Nevada communities for five projects.

Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Nevada provided the 36th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.

Nevada is ranked behind New Mexico (1 projects/$5 million) and Arizona (2 projects/$5 million) and ahead of Rhode Island (1 projects/$3 million), and Maine (11 projects/$578,828).

The most expensive subsidy provided in Nevada was by the North Las Vegas government, which offered $2 million to Amazon for a sales, business tax, and personal property tax abatements.

The second largest subsidy was worth $572,500 for sales and use tax abatements from the Reno local government.

There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.

Nevada is relatively centralized, with state programs handling incentives and tax breaks that would otherwise be handled by municipal and regional governments.

The state has never undertaken an audit to see if its tax abatements and subsidies are actually effective. It has provided billions in tax abatements for mega projects, including nearly $1.3 billion for Tesla.

As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
