Nevada has received a total of $1.67 billion in federal public education stimulus funding from Congress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funds are part of the $190.5 billion set aside for elementary and secondary school emergency relief  that was authorized under the American Rescue Plan Act, which was enacted in May, Silver State Times reported Sept. 29.

“@NevadaReady is pleased to announce the approval of Nevada’s State Plan for use of #AmericanRescuePlanAct funds (ARP ESSER) by @usedgov!” Gov. Stephen Sisolak said on Twitter. “The plan prioritizes supporting the social, emotional, & mental well-being of our students, educators and staff.”

The money will be distributed to state educational institutions under the requirement that states put aside 10% of the funds for unexpected setbacks and after-school and summer activities.

Nevada’s Department of Education intends to utilize the full 10% of its allocation to promote statewide efforts for remote learning, including funding, resources and technologies, according to a report from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The reserve funds will be available for use after the U.S. Department of Education approves the states’ implementation plans; currently, 28 states have already submitted their plans for federal approval.
