Small business owners in Nevada and across the country continue to face challenges filling open positions, according to the latest monthly Jobs Report from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). The report shows that 32% of small business owners nationally reported job openings they could not fill in September, a figure unchanged from August. The last time this number fell below 32% was in July 2020.
Tray Abney, NFIB Nevada State Director, commented on the findings: “NFIB’s recent Jobs Reports and Small Business Optimism Indexes show an economy very slowly crawling back to vibrancy but at least not slipping back. I think time will tell – and tell positively – of the beneficial effects to come out of the last session of the Nevada Legislature and of Congress making the 20% Small Business Deduction permanent, instead of letting it expire at the end of the year.”
The NFIB Jobs Report surveys small-business owners who are members of NFIB. Most members typically employ between one and nine people, with average gross sales around $500,000 annually.
Bill Dunkelberg, NFIB Chief Economist, stated: “Main Street job openings remain above their historical average, with owners reporting few qualified applicants. While a recession appears unlikely, small business owners continue to experience economic uncertainty as many owners continue to grapple with labor imbalances.”
Key points from the latest report include:
– Twenty-nine percent of owners said there were few qualified applicants for their open jobs; 21% reported none.
– A seasonally adjusted net 16% plan to create new jobs in the next three months—an increase for four consecutive months and now at its highest since January.
– A net 31% reported raising compensation in September (seasonally adjusted), up two points from August. Nineteen percent plan to raise compensation over the next three months.
The report is not broken down by state. More information about small business trends in Nevada can be found at www.nfib.com or by following NFIB on X @NFIB_NV.
