Carson City, NV – Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford has issued a consumer alert to inform residents about potentially misleading marketing practices concerning over-the-counter hearing aids. These devices are often sold without the consultation of a hearing healthcare professional, and consumers may not be fully aware of the associated risks.
“Hearing loss can be debilitating in many ways and many Nevadans are looking for affordable solutions,” stated AG Ford. “Our goal is to make sure Nevada consumers are able to make informed choices understanding the difference between FDA approved medical devices and sound amplifiers, which may not address their actual hearing needs.”
The alert highlights that some over-the-counter devices might feature “FDA Registration Certificates” resembling official documents and displaying the FDA logo. This could lead consumers to mistakenly believe these devices have received FDA approval.
While companies must register and list their medical devices with the FDA, this process only involves providing certain information to the agency. It does not equate to FDA approval, clearance, or authorization of the device. Consumers can verify listed medical devices on the FDA’s Medical Devices Database.
Attorney General Ford advises all Nevada residents, including seniors and law enforcement communities seeking hearing aid products, to ensure they consult qualified audiologists for accurate testing and advice.
