Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford has joined a coalition of 23 attorneys general and two states in a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s decision to terminate AmeriCorps grants and reduce its workforce by 85%. The lawsuit challenges these actions, arguing they effectively dismantle the agency and hinder its ability to administer programs, operations, and funding.

AmeriCorps is an independent federal agency that engages Americans in community service addressing educational, public safety, and environmental needs. Annually, it provides opportunities for over 200,000 Americans to serve their communities. “This illegal action by the Trump administration has terminated AmeriCorps programs throughout Nevada,” said AG Ford. “The Trump administration does not have the legal ability to dismantle this agency unilaterally.”

In Nevada alone, eight grant programs have been terminated, representing more than half of those administered by AmeriCorps in the state. From February 2024 to February 2025, AmeriCorps invested over $10.1 million in Nevada with more than 1,800 volunteers working at over 100 locations.

The Trump administration issued an executive order in early February directing federal agencies to plan for workforce reductions. Following this directive, AmeriCorps placed at least 85% of its workforce on administrative leave and notified employees of termination effective June 24, 2025.

On April 25, Nevada was informed about the termination of its AmeriCorps grant programs supporting volunteer efforts. The lawsuit argues that canceling critical grants and reducing the workforce violates both the Administrative Procedures Act and constitutional separation of powers.

AG Ford joins attorneys general from several states including Maryland, Delaware, California, Colorado, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island Vermont Washington Wisconsin and the District of Columbia as well as Kentucky and Pennsylvania in this legal challenge.
