Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford has announced the release of two “Know Your Rights” documents aimed at informing immigrants and their employers about their legal rights. These resources are now accessible on the Office of the Attorney General’s website.
“Nevada’s immigrant population keeps our state’s economy productive, its culture unique and its communities representative of what it means to be American,” stated AG Ford. He acknowledged concerns within immigrant communities regarding current political rhetoric and assured that their constitutional rights will be protected during his tenure as attorney general. He emphasized the importance of immigrants being aware of their legal rights to safeguard themselves against unlawful actions.
AG Ford also addressed employers, highlighting the need for them to be informed in light of threats related to workplace raids from the president-elect’s rhetoric. “I encourage anyone who believes their constitutional rights have been violated to file a complaint with my office,” he added.
The first document details individuals’ rights when approached by police or immigration officers, including lawful requests for information, the right to remain silent, and access to an attorney and interpreter. It provides guidance on scenarios such as interactions at home or in vehicles.
The second document advises employers on handling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Form I-9 audits and informs them about employee rights. It includes additional resources on immigration information and rights.
