The Nevada Department of Transportation announced on April 2 an updated schedule of traffic restrictions on Sunset Road as part of a pavement rehabilitation project. The work will improve nearly three miles of pavement between Las Vegas Boulevard and Annie Oakley Drive, with the goal of enhancing safety and extending the life of the roadway.

The department said that paving, bridge inspections, and signage work require several closures and lane reductions. From 11 p.m. Tuesday, April 7 to 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, the Sunset Road on-ramp to southbound Airport Connector will be closed along with two right lanes on southbound Airport Connector. Drivers are advised to use a detour via Las Vegas Boulevard and I-215 connections.

Nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., March 25 through April 13 (excluding Friday and Saturday evenings), Sunset Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Eastern Avenue and Annie Oakley Drive. The Pilot Drive and Grier Drive bridges over the Airport Connector will be reduced to one side for both directions of traffic, while intermittent double lane closures are planned for the Sunset Road bridge over Airport Connector.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution in work zones and consider alternate routes where possible. “NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors,” according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The Nevada Department of Transportation promotes roadway safety through programs targeting zero fatalities and advances multimodal planning for aviation, public transit, freight, bicycle and pedestrian needs, according to the official website. The agency manages about 5,400 miles of highways and more than 1,000 bridges statewide; it organizes operations through three districts in Las Vegas, Sparks and Elko with major maintenance stations for statewide coverage; it covers southern, northwest and northeast Nevada through its districts; its operations are overseen by a seven-member board; and it aims to provide a reliable transportation system that boosts safety, quality of life and economic growth—all according to information available on its official website.

Additional state highway information is available at dot.nv.gov or by calling (775) 888-7000. For current conditions visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving. More details can also be found as listed on the organization’s website at the official roster page.
