November marks National Youth Homelessness Outreach, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) Month, a period dedicated to acknowledging the challenges faced by homeless youth and reaffirming commitments to support them. Efforts are needed to understand and tackle the root causes of homelessness while addressing the health and social needs of those without homes.
The 2023 Point-in-Time Count by HUD revealed that over 34,700 young people were experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2023. Many also endure “hidden” homelessness, residing in motels or with friends and family. Youth from marginalized communities face additional hurdles such as discrimination when seeking housing.
Nevada Health Centers plays a role in addressing these issues through its Nevada Children’s Health Project in partnership with Children’s Health Fund. This initiative focuses on at-risk youth in southern Nevada, particularly those who are homeless or living in poverty. Services include medical care for individuals up to age 21 along with counseling on health topics. Walk-ins are accepted, or appointments can be scheduled by calling 702.563.4612.
