A Mexican national with prior felony convictions has been sentenced to over a year in prison for illegally reentering the United States after being removed from the country on three previous occasions. United States Chief District Judge Andrew Gordan sentenced Jose Ricardo Lopez Munoz to 13 months and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Court documents show that Lopez Munoz was found in the United States on December 1, 2023, after having been deported to Mexico on November 13, 1995, February 26, 1997, and August 1, 2013. He was arrested by state law enforcement in Clark County, Nevada, on November 28, 2023, for making a false statement to obstruct a public officer.

Lopez Munoz has prior felony convictions. In 2002 he was convicted of menacing in El Paso County, Colorado. In 2007 he was convicted in Clark County, Nevada, for challenge to fight with use of a deadly weapon and with intent to promote or assist a criminal gang. After serving more than six years in prison related to these offenses, he was deported for a third time in 2013.

He pleaded guilty to one count of being a deported alien found in the United States. Following his prison sentence, he will be deported to Mexico for a fourth time.

Acting United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada and Salt Lake City Field Office Acting Director Jason Knight announced the sentencing. The case was investigated by ICE Salt Lake City’s Las Vegas Sub-Office and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada.
