Joe Lombardo, Governor of Nevada, said that new legislation will enhance school accountability, reward high-performing educators, and increase options for families.

“Today, I introduced the Accountability in Education Act because Nevada students deserve better,” said Lombardo, Nevada State Executive – Governor (R). “Our bill rewards great teachers, demands real accountability, and gives families and students unprecedented choice.”

Nevada has taken significant steps toward K-12 education reform, driven by both legislative and executive actions to improve school quality and accountability. In 2023, the Nevada Legislature approved a $2 billion boost in education funding, targeting teacher recruitment and program expansion. According to The Nevada Independent, Governor Lombardo followed up in 2025 by introducing the Accountability in Education Act, which emphasizes student performance metrics, teacher empowerment, and expanding school choice. These efforts aim to address longstanding underperformance in the state’s public schools.

According to the Nevada Department of Education, the state’s overall high school graduation rate fell slightly to 81.4% in 2023, down from 81.7% in 2022. However, academic performance has shown pockets of improvement; for example, eighth-grade science proficiency in Pershing County rose by over 15 percentage points year-over-year. These figures highlight mixed but measurable outcomes from recent reforms.

As reported by Ballotpedia, Nevada has expanded school choice options including open enrollment, magnet and charter schools, and scholarship tax credit programs. Over the past five years, parental participation in these alternatives has grown steadily, reflecting demand for more flexible education options. These trends underscore a broader shift toward customized learning paths for Nevada families.

According to his official biography on the Nevada Governor’s Office website, Joe Lombardo is the current Governor of Nevada and a former sheriff of Clark County. He served over 30 years in law enforcement after his military service and holds a master’s degree in crisis management from UNLV (University of Nevada Las Vegas). Lombardo’s administration has prioritized education reform as part of his broader governance agenda.
