The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) has started offering free meals to children and teenagers aged 18 or younger in northern Nevada. The program aims to meet the ongoing need for meals even when school is not in session. Last academic year, over 21.3 million breakfasts and 39.7 million lunches were served to students in Nevada, highlighting the importance of programs like SFSP during school vacations.
Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and managed by the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA), SFSP collaborates with community organizations to provide food access.
“During the year escolar, el desayuno y el almuerzo escolares pueden ser la principal fuente de nutrición para muchos estudiantes”, afirmó Patricia Hoppe, administradora de la División de Alimentos y Nutrición del NDA. “Nos enorgullece asociarnos con estas organizaciones locales para garantizar que miles de estudiantes en nuestro estado sigan teniendo acceso a comidas nutritivas durante los meses de verano”.
SFSP meal sites include schools, camps, parks, playgrounds, housing projects, community centers, churches, and other public places where children gather during summer.
Parents and young people can find nearby meal sites by visiting nvsummermeals.com, texting “Comidas de verano” to 914-342-7744 or calling 1-877-842-6273.
The mission of the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) is to preserve, protect and promote agriculture in Nevada. With 225 dedicated employees across five divisions—Administrative Services, Animal Industry, Measurement Standards, Food and Nutrition, and Plant Health and Compliance—the department’s $288 million budget supports regulatory work in agricultural and food manufacturing industries while protecting public health and safety as well as providing oversight for USDA nutrition programs.
