FOIA Request to Nevada System of Higher Education Regarding Financial Aid Fraud on May 7, 2025.

As part of our ongoing commitment to uncovering and reporting on issues affecting local governmental affairs, we at Silver State Times have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Nevada System of Higher Education. This request seeks detailed records related to financial aid fraud within their institutions.

The inquiry was prompted by alarming reports from California community colleges, where financial aid fraud has escalated significantly. According to a recent article, bots now comprise 25% of applicants in these colleges. These fraudulent activities are orchestrated by scammers known as “Pell runners,” who exploit artificial intelligence to secure grants and then disappear, causing schools over $5 million in losses since 2021. Despite enhanced detection efforts, the fraud continues unabated, overwhelming online classes and challenging existing cybersecurity measures.

In light of these developments, we have requested specific data points from the Nevada System of Higher Education to understand if similar patterns are occurring within their jurisdiction. The requested information includes:

– College Name
– Applicant Name
– Fraud Amount
– Fraud Incident Date

As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public, access to such records is crucial for us. We believe that our role in disseminating information qualifies us for a fee waiver under the provisions available for media professionals.

This request is also supported by The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization assisting news media companies and advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.

We await the response from the Nevada System of Higher Education and will continue to keep our readers informed about this critical issue affecting educational institutions.
