WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03), a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, was among the first members of the House of Representatives to sign three discharge petitions that would force a full House vote on three common sense gun violence prevention measures currently being blocked by Republican leadership.
“If Republican leaders won’t bring common sense legislation to the floor to curb our gun violence epidemic, then Democrats have no choice but to force the issue,” said Congresswoman Lee. “During National Gun Violence Awareness Month, at a time when the overwhelming majority of Americans support reasonable steps to save lives, I signed three discharge petitions to bring exactly these types of measures to the House floor for a vote. With my signature, I aim to force votes to require basic background checks, close the Charleston Loophole, and restore an assault weapons ban. Nevadans know all too well the pain and heartbreak felt by each mass shooting, and Congress must act now to prevent these sorts of tragedies from continuing to devastate our communities. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support these lifesaving petitions and bring this legislation to the floor.”
While Speaker McCarthy and Republican leaders refuse to hold a vote on these common sense measures, House Democrats are leading the effort to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer by introducing these discharge petitions that would force a full vote on these bills with signatures from a majority of the House.
The three discharge petitions signed by Congresswoman Lee earlier correspond with the following bills—each of which she cosponsors:
- H.R. 715 – Bipartisan Background Checks Act, legislation requiring that every sale of a firearm includes a background check with certain exemptions for family transfers and temporary hunting transfers.
- H.R. 2403 – Enhanced Background Checks Act, legislation to close the “Charleston Loophole” that allows an individual to purchase firearms before approval of their background check if it is still pending after three days.
- H.R. 698 – Assault Weapons Ban, legislation to prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of semiautomatic weapons and ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than fifteen rounds.
