Chuck Muth, president of Citizen Outreach, questioned Republican support for ranked choice voting in a column published March 12, arguing the system conflicts with traditional vote-counting methods.
“Why would any conservative Republican support ranked choice voting. Ranked choice voting is often referred to as Rigged Choice Voting by conservatives. One person. One vote. Count the votes. The candidate with the most wins. Done,” Muth said in an article published in Nevada News and Views.
His remarks come after Nevada voters rejected a 2024 ballot measure that would have implemented ranked choice voting and open primaries.
The issue reflects ongoing debates within the Republican Party over election procedures and candidate selection methods. In his column, Muth also discussed the candidacy of a Republican seeking the nomination for state treasurer and examined that candidate’s involvement in a policy study on primary election reforms.
The 2024 ballot measure would have changed how candidates advance in statewide and congressional races, but was rejected by voters across the state, according to AOL.
Chicago Star Media reports that Republican voters nationwide have expressed reservations about ranked choice voting, according to multiple surveys of party members. The system has faced opposition in several states where it has been proposed or implemented, with conservative organizations citing concerns about complexity and differences from traditional vote-counting methods.
Muth is president of Citizen Outreach, a Las Vegas-based conservative organization focused on grassroots advocacy and policy issues. He previously held leadership roles with the Nevada Republican Party and the Republican Liberty Caucus and publishes commentary on state political matters through his platforms.
