Churchill County Commissioners will hold a meeting on April 17 at 8:15 a.m. to appoint a new sheriff following the death of Sheriff Richard Hickox. The appointment will fill the remainder of Hickox’s term, which is set to run through the end of the 2026 calendar year. The meeting is scheduled in Chambers at 155 N. Taylor Street in Fallon and will also be live streamed.

The process for selecting a new sheriff follows Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 293.165, which outlines how candidates may file for nonpartisan office at the general election. According to this statute, individuals interested in running for sheriff must file a declaration of candidacy with the appropriate filing officer and pay the required fee after 8 a.m. on the third Monday in June and before 5 p.m. on the fourth Friday in July.

Those wishing to become candidates should submit their paperwork at the Churchill County Clerk/Treasurer’s office located at Suite 110, 155 N. Taylor Street during regular business hours.

The appointment comes as Churchill County addresses leadership changes after Sheriff Hickox’s passing and ensures continuity until voters select a permanent replacement through an election process later this year.

Community members can attend or view proceedings online as county officials move forward with filling this key public safety position.
