Students interested in receiving a free meal can do so as several school districts across the state are initiating a summer meal program.

According to a news release from the Clark County School District (CCSD), schools that are still in operation for the summer due to summer school or summer acceleration will provide free lunch and breakfast on days when the school is open.

The Nevada Independent reported that a big reason behind the decision was the surging inflation that has made meals pricier than usual.

Lory Hayon, a registered dietician for CCSD told the news organization: “We are fielding a lot of parent calls because last year, during the pandemic… we were sending meals home with the students. But currently, with the current federal regulations, we are… moving back to a normal food service program.”

CCSD reported that 300 schools will be open due to summer acceleration, eight schools would be open due to secondary school and 50 schools would be open for extended school.

“In order to follow USDA guidelines, meals must be consumed onsite and drive-thru meal distribution is unavailable,” the release states.

Students on campus, along with children who want a meal, will be fed through the Summer Food Service Program, according to CCSD.
