Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford has joined a coalition of 21 attorneys general in urging the Trump Administration to restore Title X funding, which was recently withheld by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Title X is the only federal program dedicated to family planning for low-income and uninsured individuals, signed into law by President Richard Nixon.
On March 31, HHS informed various grant recipients that their Title X grants were being withheld, affecting nearly 25% of all Title X clinics. The attorneys general expressed concerns that this decision could lead to increased unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), undiagnosed HIV cases, cervical cancer rates, and place a higher burden on state budgets. They urged HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to reverse the decision and fully fund these programs.
Attorney General Ford stated his concern: “I’m deeply troubled by the decision to withhold Title X funding that so many vulnerable Nevadans rely on for family planning and reproductive health.” He emphasized that cutting this funding creates a healthcare crisis impacting Nevada families.
In states like California, Hawaii, and Maine, all Title X funds have been withheld, leading to a complete cessation of funding in those areas. States are now tasked with filling the gaps left by federal shortfalls as healthcare providers associated with Title X face closures and terminations. This situation disproportionately affects poor and rural communities where Title X clinics often serve as the sole source for pre-natal services and STI screenings.
The letter sent today includes signatures from attorneys general across multiple states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The effort was co-led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Hawaii Attorney General Anne E. Lopez.
