Attorney General Aaron D. Ford addressed recent comments from Governor Joe Lombardo regarding model immigration policies issued by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). Ford refuted Lombardo’s suggestion that these policies aim to turn Nevada into a sanctuary state.
Ford stated, “Let me be clear: I do not support sanctuary policies. Period.” He emphasized that the legislature required his office to create model policies to clarify legal responsibilities related to immigration enforcement. “That’s exactly what we did — nothing more, nothing less,” he added.
According to Ford, these guidelines are non-binding and law enforcement agencies must inform the OAG if they intend to adopt them or develop their own. This requirement comes from legislative direction, not his office’s initiative. He clarified that the policies do not protect criminals nor hinder cooperation with law enforcement but aim to enhance public safety.
Ford remarked on the governor’s reaction, stating it would be understandable if the model policies were unexpected. However, since they stem from legislative directives, any lack of awareness falls on the governor’s office rather than his own.
Concluding his statement, Ford expressed disinterest in engaging in political disputes and reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his duties as elected by Nevadans.
